I think it is a move in the right direction, along with education in schools and to the wider public, and professionals. Unfortunately it is not going to improve much until serious money is put into 12 Step residential rehabilitation places, staffed mainly by recovered alcoholics. We may then see a beginning of the tide turning. I work in addictions and unfortunately the professional community is plagued by ignorance and misunderstanding, its a real shame, doesn't need to be this way. It has gotten worse, since the word alcoholic has been replaced by alcohol dependence, in the professional community. This was a bad mistake, in the 12 Step fellowships, everyone is allowed the dignity of diagnosing themselves, or not :) Alcoholism cannot be sorted by enabling folks to carry on drinking, it doesn't work for an alcoholic. It may for a heavy drinker, but these are two very different peoples.
