I don't understand how this is meant to make a difference. The idea behind this was to reduce alcohol-related hospitalisations and deaths. Most of those seem to relate to spirits, obviously, since you take in a lot more units of alcohol much more quickly. I've just done some research online and am unable to find any spirits that are cheaper than 50p multiplied by the amount of units of alcohol they contain, at any of the large retailers. So, a 50p minimum unit price will not affect the price of spirits in any way whatsoever. In fact, even looking at large multi-packs of fermented alcohol, this is hardly going to make a difference. An 18-pack of stella currently costs £16. Each can holds 440 ml at 4.8% ABV. This equates to 38.016 units of alcohol. Therefore, the new minimum price of an 18 pack of Redacted textwould be £19.01. Oh yeah, I'm sure people inclined towards alcohol abuse will think very long and hard about spending those extra three pounds and a penny, and very likely decide it's not worth it. (That was sarcasm.)
