We invite comments on the proposed minimum price of 50 pence per unit which is set out in the draft Scottish Statutory Instrument at Annex A .
I believe that as part of tackling the influence of over indulgence in the consumption of alcohol, there should be a minimum price per unit. However I also believe that that alone is not sufficient because it will not deter those with sufficient wealth to enable them to consume as much as they want to. I would suggest that in conjunction with minimum pricing, there should be a reduction in the strength of all alcohol Whoever alcohol can be purchased either for removal from or consumption on the premises. I do not believe that companies involved in the production or sale of alcohol should be able to change the law because of commercial interests, rather they should behave responsibly by caring for the health interests of their customers.
