More funding is required for longer-term cultural projects aimed at engaging disadvantaged people and reducing inequality - too many things have short-term funding, which means that benefits dissipate quickly and communities don't feel a lasting benefit or strengthen their relationship with culture in the longer term.

It would be nice if the 'inclusive and extending' view of culture had a broader view than has sometimes been taken in the past - some of Scotland's smaller communities feel very insular, in part because there are frequent celebrations of their own specific culture, with very little funding and few opportunities to explore a wider definition, drawing on culture that's arisen from further afield or from different life experiences.

So far as funding models are concerned, this would seem like an excellent use for the oft-proposed tourist tax. If the larger cities, particularly Edinburgh but also Glasgow and further afield, were able to charge a modest supplement to the millions of tourists they host each year (thus bringing them in line with every other major European city) then that money could be used to support the culture that so many of our tourists come here to enjoy. Even if that supplement were only used locally, it would free up more national funding for rural and semi-rural locations. The argument that a supplement would put off tourists is ludicrous, as the model has been so thoroughly tested elsewhere with no adverse effect. The potential benefits to Scotland's cultural offering (and the infrastructure that supports it) could be huge.

The Melrose Book Festival never ceases to charm as a perfectly-sized event attracting people from a much wider geographical area, and attracting some very impressive speakers.

14. What do you think success for the strategy will look like?

What do you think success for the strategy will look like?
Broadening the scope of cultural events beyond Edinburgh, bringing investment and tourism to smaller towns and more rural locations, and broadening the cultural offering available in these places to be more inclusive and less exclusively Scotland-focussed.
