I really like the inclusion of the fact that Scotland has no 'one' story of culture, but rather the country has a story shaped by many cultures and communities.

I think it is crucial that the strategy retain the importance of culture at the core of inequality and social issues. Understanding and valuing culture is key to empowering minority and marginalised communities to access social and economic opportunities.

5. Please provide comments on the aims and actions under this ambition. What do you like, or dislike, or what would you change?

I think the above aims are progressive and will prove effective. However I think it is critical that the aims, as well as being inclusive of other sectors (i.e. academia) retain the importance of working with community members who have a lived experience of cultures.

Empowering through culture

I think it is valuable that the aim includes both 'established' and 'emerging' cultures. Scotland has a wealth of indigenous cultures with ancient roots to the land, but it also has a wealth of migrant cultures which is often overlooked. The value that these emerging cultures give to Scotland as a whole is huge. Furthermore, the inclusion of these cultures in a strategy such as this ensures that racism and intolerance is called out - with value being shown towards cultural diversity instead.

I fully agree with and support all of the above aims. Aim 3 is one of the most important so far in the document.

I think these aims are fantastic and long overdue! Especially those which look at increasing the funding mechanisms and opportunities for the creative and cultural sector. It has been a problem for a long time that this sector is underfunded and has been forced to do a lot with very little resource. It is also brilliant that these aims support creative people to add their experience and skills to creative and cultural work.

Delivering A Culture Strategy for Scotland

12. Please provide details of any examples of good work and best practice, from Scotland or internationally, that you think could be included in the final strategy? We are interested in a range of different approaches.

The organisation Article 12 in Scotland organised a fantastic series of events to celebrate and mark Scotland's first endorsed Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month. The events were based around the diverse cultures of Scotland's Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities. Feedback from the events showed an increased understanding and appreciation of the value that these cultures add to Scotland. Furthermore the events allowed for stereotypes and intolerance to be challenged through creative means. There is some fantastic work ongoing with the organisation MECOPP around arts and culture of Gypsy/Travellers. Furthermore the organisation Romano Lav in Glasgow has built upon the cultural talents and experiences of Glasgow's Roma community in order to help build cultural belonging and break stereotypes of the community. There is also some great examples of practice from the organistaion 'Romani cultural arts' in Wales. They have been supported by partners, including the Welsh Government to deliver cultural projects to help the Romany and Traveller community to break down inequalities.

13. What can you or your organisation do to support the vision, aims, ambitions and actions of the strategy?

What can you or your organisation do to support the vision, aims, ambitions
The aims and ambitions that are highlighted throughout this document are very aligned with the ambitions I have personally as a Gypsy and Traveller Activist. It is of greatest importance to me that all of Scotland's cultures are given a place and respected. Therefore I can personally as an activist support all the aims set out within this strategy.

14. What do you think success for the strategy will look like?

This is an ongoing process however to me success will be when we can see elements of this strategy filtering into education systems and entering mainstream discourse within society.

I believe that the outlined approach above sounds very good, as long as it retains an importance of consultation with grassroots members as well as strategic academic processes.

I think its important that there is a strategic working group to monitor the process of the strategy. This group should ensure that spokespeople and representative bodies of cultures are allowed a platform of input.

I think its very important that the views of young people and children are engaged and used to input into the outcomes of the strategy. Furthermore it is important that no matter a persons background they have an ability to be engaged in the mechanisms for evaluating the outcome of the strategy.

20. Do you think the partial Children’s Rights and Welfare Impact Assessment sets out how the proposals presented in the strategy might impact on the rights and welfare of children?

I think the strategy will allow for better cultural confidence to be built among marginalised communities. Furthermore it will increase cultural inclusion and help to break down stereotypes and cultural intolerance.

23. Do you think the partial Business and Regulatory Impact Assessment identifies how the proposals presented in the Strategy might impact on businesses, the third (voluntary) sector or have any regulatory impact?

It will further add to cultural diversity within workforces and thus ensure a greater level of representation of marginalised and disempowered communities and cultures in Scotland. This is greatly valuable to the business and third sector as it will add a wealth of experience and diversity.
