Please explain your answer.
However, it can’t be built or achieved on a ‘materials economy’ system, so I’m nervous when expressions like ‘increased productivity’ are left undefined. It’s too linear, and an outdated paradigm. We need an alternative that’s realistically achievable and sustainable with a modest population. I don’t quite know what that would look like!

2. What would you like to see for the South of Scotland?

What would you like to see for the South of Scotland?
Reduction in mental health problems that stem from lack of work/purpose and the centralising of survices which alienate people at grass roots. Borderers have lost that sense of community since the introduction of large supermarkets, etc. Those who have cars now use them daily to shuttle people to and fro school, supermarkets, across the Borders for medical appointments, so no longer walk. Strength of local community is still found in villages, but we’re loosing it in larger towns because of the necessity of the car. Good cycle networks would help.

I’d like to challenge superficial definitions of economics success, and look at the broader impact and definition of ‘success’ in South Scotland.

The economic context of the South of Scotland

4. What are the strengths you would like to see the Agency build on?

What are the strengths you would like to see the Agency
Holding together traditional strengths with sustainable technology, or ‘green’ innovations. The South of Scotland is an ideal location to develop 21 century sustainable living ideas for all. From cycling networks, to flexible schooling/work, to green energy and recycling. Locals are naturally resourceful, so this could be harnessed and built upon.

5. What are the economic challenges you would like to see the Agency address?

Growing income inequality.

Potential Activities for the South of Scotland Enterprise

7. What would you add or take away from the potential activities that the Agency could carry out across the three areas:

a) drive forward the economy?
Increase Small business support please.
b) sustain communities?
Positively
c) capitalise on people and resources?
Borderers need to be connected to the people and land about them to maintain mental health! Find a way to get folks out and about again. Pedestrianise the larger town centres and allow businesses to flourish instead of limiting their potential by constant restrictions. Allow more live music, theatre, and street food. Increase core pathways and cycle routes. It would also increase tourism.

9. What specific things could the Agency do to help you, your business, your sector or your community?

What specific things could the Agency do to help you, your
As above...the local council should encourage traders, and only limit activity when it clearly needs policing. However, trading licenses should only be granted if businesses honour environmental objectives, ie, no single use plastic (limits litter) . And, be proud! Limit the number of chain shops selling junk! Put a cap on rental values in town centres and offer local people opportunities. There are plenty of great ideas, but greedy landlords!

Other issues

15. We know that young people are less likely to stay in or move to the South of Scotland than they are other parts of the country. Do you have any comments on things the Agency could do to meet the interests of children and young people?

The younger generation feel everything is a fait acompli, and that their voice won’t be heard. A vibrant young persons forum perhaps? And show how a career path might pass through/culminate in the South of Scotland successfully. I employ high school students, all of whom feel they have to leave the Borders to achieve. Cuts are constantly being made to services they naturally love, like Outdoor Education and the arts, so they learn to loose hope during school years. The message they receive from an early age is that opportunities lie out with the South of Scotland. It’s not true of course, and the quality of life with a modest income in the Borders can be fantastic. We need to celebrate our quality of life more!
