Community Considerations

1. What are your views on the potential social, community and health impacts of an unconventional oil and gas industry in Scotland?

What are your views on the potential social, community and health impacts of an unconventional oil and gas industry in Scotland?
I feel that the social and community impacts from unconventional extraction would be positive for the nation as a whole; with a caveat around the potential health impacts, as these would require much more detailed assessment.I feel that our regulatory compliance within Scotland will stand us in good stead, in controlling effectively these new industries.

2. What are your views on the community benefit schemes that could apply, were an unconventional oil and gas industry to be developed in Scotland?

What are your views on the community benefit schemes that could apply, were an unconventional oil and gas industry to be developed in Scotland?
My view is that we should learn from the missed opportunities of North Sea oil & gas in Scotland and use Norwegian models for the setting up and running of community benefit schemes. I would have concerns if our Orkney and Shetland community benefit schemes were to be used as good examples; as I am of the view that they would not suit mainland Scotland as a whole.

What are your views on the potential impact of unconventional oil and gas industry on Scotland's economy and manufacturing sector?
I am of the view that this new industry would have a positive impact on the Scottish economy; I do however feel that we need to be smarter in retaining any manufacturing spin off in Scotland.

4. What are your views on the potential role of unconventional oil and gas in Scotland's energy mix?

What are your views on the potential role of unconventional oil and gas in Scotland's energy mix?
I feel that there is a risk that this new source of energy may set back Scotland's renewable energy agenda.

Environmental Considerations

5. What are your views on the potential environmental impacts of an unconventional oil and gas industry in Scotland?

What are your views on the potential environmental impacts of an unconventional oil and gas industry in Scotland?
Environmental impacts should be negligible to nil. Suitably constructed Legislation and a robust compliance framework will ensure that. Compliance costs must be levied against the producers and manged by Government. If it is viewed that achieving negligible or nil environmental impacts are not financially viable, we should not carry out the extraction.

6. What are your views on the potential climate change impacts of unconventional oil and gas industry in Scotland?

What are your views on the potential climate change impacts of unconventional oil and gas industry in Scotland?
Without a fuller understanding of what industries the materials will be used in, it is difficult to align with potential climate change; regardless of that, everything we set out to do should focus on minimising the potential for climate change.

7. What are your views on the regulatory framework that would apply to an unconventional oil and gas industry in Scotland?

hat are you views on the regulatory framework that would apply to an unconventional oil and gas industry in Scotland?
The framework should be as loophole free as possible, allow for future development, have heavy financial penalties against non-compliance, be funded by industry, be fully resourced, be independently audited for compliance and effectiveness and not industry led.

Economic improvements, Social improvements funded through industry levy, increased manufacturing opportunities and a chance to once again show the rest of the world how it should be done in society's interest. Skilled job creation.

9. Overall, and in light of the available evidence, what do you think would be the main risks or challenges, if any, of an unconventional oil and gas industry in Scotland?

Overall, and in light of the available evidence, what do you think would be the main risks or challenges, if any, of an unconventional oil and gas industry in Scotland?
Poor/inadequate Legislative control from start up. Allowing industry to 'call the shots'. Allowing the added value opportunities of the product extracted to be gained outwith Scotland.
