Community Considerations

1. What are your views on the potential social, community and health impacts of an unconventional oil and gas industry in Scotland?

What are your views on the potential social, community and health impacts of an unconventional oil and gas industry in Scotland?
Fracking will lead to an increase in pollution and the dessimation of parts of the Scottish landscape and environment. People will feel even more devalued as a result of having been ignored, communities will be damaged by fracking wells and health will suffer as a result of noise, ground water contamination and probably indirect air pollution. Scotland can't afford to damage the health of its residents any more.

2. What are your views on the community benefit schemes that could apply, were an unconventional oil and gas industry to be developed in Scotland?

What are your views on the community benefit schemes that could apply, were an unconventional oil and gas industry to be developed in Scotland?
These are a sticking plaster. There is no financial 'benefit' that compensates for basic amenities being polluted and communities being treated like commodities.

Economic Considerations

3. What are your views on the potential impact of unconventional oil and gas industry on Scotland's economy and manufacturing sector?

What are your views on the potential impact of unconventional oil and gas industry on Scotland's economy and manufacturing sector?
I believe the fracking industry would be of minimal benefit to the economic or manufacturing sector. Why would either benefit when the equipment comes with the fracking company and the money goes to it? In fact, it's likely to be entirely detrimental as Scotland's international reputation as an innovator in design and engineering projects is undermined by our agreement to proceed with fracking. When renewable sources and technologies are recognised internationally to be the next major growth industry, and when that process is already underway, we would simply be sending a message that Scotland is reverting to the last century. Bang goes any hope of developing a new relationship with the EU, or, indeed, of any progressive alliance.

4. What are your views on the potential role of unconventional oil and gas in Scotland's energy mix?

What are your views on the potential role of unconventional oil and gas in Scotland's energy mix?
They have no place in it. We have so much wind and wave power that it is retrograde in the extreme to lend any support to the fracking industry.

Environmental Considerations

5. What are your views on the potential environmental impacts of an unconventional oil and gas industry in Scotland?

What are your views on the potential environmental impacts of an unconventional oil and gas industry in Scotland?
Catastrophic. Both locally, for the communities (both human and otherwise) which would be displaced by fracking wells, and regionally nationally and internationally by water contamination and the air pollution created by using any of the fuel extracted by this method.

6. What are your views on the potential climate change impacts of unconventional oil and gas industry in Scotland?

What are your views on the potential climate change impacts of unconventional oil and gas industry in Scotland?
Any further fossil fuel extraction and burning has proven consequences for climate disruption. We should be decommissioning existing fossil fuel plants, not seeking out new ones. We already know we're going to breach the 2 degree mark. We can only speculate about how much worse life is going to get if we exceed that limit. There is no responsible way to extract and burn fossil fuels.

7. What are your views on the regulatory framework that would apply to an unconventional oil and gas industry in Scotland?

hat are you views on the regulatory framework that would apply to an unconventional oil and gas industry in Scotland?
I don't think it's possible for any regulatory framework to be of any use whatsoever. So what if there are strict regulations, and so what, even, if they are strictly adhered to? We will still be contributing to air pollution, water pollution and greenhouse gas emmisions and the concomitant increase in climate disruption events. We have a duty to protect ourselves and future generations from the damage our resources could inflict. No framework other than an outright and permanent ban could possibly be effective.

Concluding Remarks

8. Overall, and in light of the available evidence, what do you think would be the main benefits, if any, of an unconventional oil and gas industry in Scotland?

Overall, and in light of the available evidence, what do you think would be the main benefits, if any, of an unconventional oil and gas industry in Scotland?
I can see no benefits.

9. Overall, and in light of the available evidence, what do you think would be the main risks or challenges, if any, of an unconventional oil and gas industry in Scotland?

Overall, and in light of the available evidence, what do you think would be the main risks or challenges, if any, of an unconventional oil and gas industry in Scotland?
The risks include ground water contamination, air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, loss of communities, loss of natural habitats. The challenges would be impossible - how do you extract shale gas and use it without causing environmental damage? There is no way to overcome that challenge.

10. If you have any other comments on the issues discussed in this consultation, please provide them here.

If you have any other comments on the issues discussed in this consultation, please provide them here.
It strikes me as ridiculous that there is even a need for this consultation. It is blatantly obvious, proved beyond reasonable doubt, and incontrovertible fact that the extraction and burning of any more fossil fuels will cause exponential damage to our communities, our nation, and our planet. This case should have been closed a very long time ago.
