2. . What do you use the SHS for? We are particularly interested in how analysis of SHS data is used for informing, monitoring and evaluating policy and practice decisions, including examples of where analysis has influenced decision making. Please be as specific as possible in your answers.

Please explain
Producing State of Scotland's Greenspace reports - in combination with quantitative data about the extent and distribution of greenspaces to report on people's use and perceptions of greenspace - informing and monitoring impact of policy and practice changes at national and regional levels Working with local authorities using SHS greenspace data to inform the development of open space strategies and to monitor the impact of changing [strategic and practical] management on people's use and perception of greenspace Looking forward with the addition of new Scotland Performs indicator for 'improving access to greenspace' to monitor change nationally, regionally and at local authority level

3.. Are there any alternative evidence sources available for the topics and/or questions you use in the SHS?

Please select one item
Yes
Ticked No
Please list alternative evidence sources for each topic
The Scotland's People and Nature Survey (SPANS) 2013/14 provided some information about greenspace use at a national level but the sample size does not permit analysis at local authority level SPANS was originally planned as a triennial survey but a decision is awaited about whether this survey will be commissioned in 2016/17.

Section B - Views on options for 2017

4.. What would be the impact of SHS option A for your organisation’s use of the SHS? Please distinguish between the different topics you use when answering.

Please explain
Reporting on changes in greenspace use would be on a biennial rather than annual basis - this would be acceptable Sample sizes would be sufficient to enable reporting at national, regional and local authority levels

5.. What would be the impact of SHS option B for your organisation’s use of the SHS? Please distinguish between the different topics you use when answering.

Please explain
Concern about the potential of reduction in topics and questions Would require move to biennial reporting using two-year rolling sample for local authority level reporting of greenspace use

6.. Do you prefer option A or option B?

Please select one item
Ticked Option A
Option B
What is the reason for your option preference?
Retains the number of topics and questions Move to reporting on a biennial basis for greenspace is acceptable and enables changes and trends to be monitored at national, regional and local authority level

7.. Under option A (biennial) half of the topics would be asked in 2017 (odd year) and half in 2018 (even year) (assuming this is the model adopted for 2018-2021). Do you have any views on what topics should be asked in 2017 and 2018?

Please explain
Preference for greenspace questions to be asked in 2017 to align with new data on greenspace extents. This would enable State of Scotland's Greenspace report to be published in 2018 using SHS and quantitative data on greenspace type and extent from new Scotland's Greenspace Map which will be available in March 2017. This would also align with the biennial publication of the State of UK Parks reports by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

8.. Under option B (reduction in sample size), a small reduction in full sample topic coverage of around 4 minutes (around 7% of questions) is necessary to maintain current ‘one third sample questions’ at around their present sample size. How should this be achieved?

Please select one item
i. By cutting topics completely
ii. By reducing breadth of larger topics
Ticked iii. By introducing more biennial topics and questions
iv. By introducing more one third sample questions

10.. Under option B (cut in sample size), would you prefer local authority data to be published on a:

Please select one item
Two year rolling average basis every year
Ticked Two year basis every two years (i.e. 2017 and 2018 data would be published in 2019, 2019 and 2020 data would be published in 2021)

Section C - Looking Ahead

11.. Looking ahead to 2018-2021 , the Scottish Government may need to make further reductions to the SHS. If this is necessary, would you prefer any further changes to the SHS to be based on:

Please select one item
i. A reduction in the overall SHS sample size
Ticked ii. A reduction in the frequency of SHS data collection
iii. A reduction in SHS topic coverage
iv. Other – please state

12.. What would be the impact on the work of your organisation if there were to be a further:

Please be specific as possible in your answers.
Reduction in sample size would impact on local authority level reporting and use of greenspace data Reduction in frequency would impact on reporting on 'improving access to greenspace' national indicator and make it more difficult to link changes in SHS greenspace results to policy and practice changes
