Do you agree with the definition provided of STEM for the purposes of this Strategy?
Digital skills do not enable the STEM subjects. Digital skills are a benefit for some things but do not disbar you from achieving anything in the fields.

2. Do you think the aims of this Strategy and the four priority themes are the right ones to address the challenges identified?

Perhaps the subset headings are debatable in some respects

3. Are these success criteria right?

No
If not, tell us what criteria we should use instead.
But! Who is delivering this knowledge/information/skills? Why do we have so many bodies doing their own thing? Is there to be a central strategy?

4. Do you think the scope of the Strategy is right? Tell us if you think it should exclude something or include anything else. For example, should it include training and development that employers provide for their workforce?

Can it include community learning perhaps using educational establishments at night? This gives access to people who strive to better themselves but have to work in an unrelated field to put food on the table.

5. Give us your views on whether you think the actions already underway across the sectors on STEM fit well with the Strategy and will contribute positively to it.

There is too much of a guddle about the work being done to improve the understanding and use of the STEM subjects.

6. Tell us about activity currently ongoing – either included in this document or not – that you think could be adapted or stopped and why.

There needs to be oversight of all the work being done in this sector to identify best practice and make sure it is utilised.

Not if the delivery/partnership/outcomes are fragmented

10. Will this Strategy improve equity of outcomes? If not, tell us what else it should include, in particular for women and girls and other groups of people – disabled people, care leavers and minority ethnic communities.

With some caveats. I think that the gender specific aims are admirable but must not be allowed to impede the need for better engagement with STEM subjects. I see no gender imbalance if the science subjects are looked at as a whole. Individually there is a greater number of males in Physics, Chemistry is about 50/50 as it has always been and Biology is in places a preserve of females. Will there be a national boys for biology strategy implemented to address this?

11. What could schools, colleges, universities, community learning and development, the voluntary sector, science engagement providers and museums do to support the areas for action?

There needs to be more social responsibility amongst employers. Public sector companies/employers should be doing more to promote work placements, outreach and school visits and not hiding behind poorly interpreted legislation (like the NHS for instance) to absolve them from doing their bit.

12. What could professional organisations and bodies and third sector organisations do to support the areas for action? This includes, in particular, the General Teaching Council for Scotland, the CLD Standards Council, the teaching unions and representatives and the Learned Societies.

Make it easier for them to get the help they need from partner organisations. Improve knowledge of the bodies that can provide that help.

13. What more could science centres and festivals do to complement and enhance STEM formal education, to inspire scientists of the future, and to ensure their activities support those of the Scottish Government and its agencies?

Talk to each other to ensure a single strategy is being followed. Increase outreach and make visits more affordable. Some of the things I see are people saying look how clever we are and more needs to be just about having fun and learning whilst doing it.

14. Should this Strategy identify more actions for particular sectors, for example in relation to workplace and work-based training and development? Please make suggestions on what these actions could be.

Absolutely.

There needs to be a STEM Ambassador type programme in reverse. STEM Ambassadors get a newsletter full of requests for visits. There needs to be strenuous targeting of the schools which never ask for help. The ones who never appear on the request list.

16. Tell us what you think of our proposal for developing a model of collaboration between schools, colleges, universities and employers. How should we now take this forward?

Admirable

As far as I am aware the STEM Ambassador contract holder like Science Connects already talk to each other. More communication between these bodies and government would be helpful.

19. Tell us about what you are doing in your organisation, establishment or community that supports the aims and priorities of this Strategy.

I am a STEM Ambassador and I have been preaching endlessly about increasing awareness and holding public bodies accountable for their lack of activity in these fields.
