A consultation paper and Business and Regulatory Impact Assessment (BRIA) has been published setting out the possible implications of being upgraded to Negligible Risk (NR) status.

Why your views matter

BSE is a notifiable disease. The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) classifies the BSE risk status of cattle on the basis of a risk assessment. Under requirements defined by the OIE and the EU Commission Regulation EC 999/2001, a country or region can apply for Negligible Risk (NR) status provided key criteria are met. Scotland has been BSE-free since 2009 and is now eligible to make an application for BSE NR status as a region of the UK. This consultation is seeking views on making any such application. 

What happens next

Following the closing date, all responses will be analysed and considered along with any other available evidence to help us reach a decision on whether a BSE Negligible Risk status application should be made.
