The Cremation (Scotland) Regulations 2017
Overview
The Burial and Cremation (Scotland) Act 2016 provides a modern, comprehensive legislative framework for burial and cremation. The existing legislation was outdated and increasingly unfit for purpose. Many of the Act’s provisions are rooted in recommendations made by various review groups, particularly the Infant Cremation Commission and the Burial and Cremation Review Group.
The Burial and Cremation (Scotland) Act 2016 received Royal Assent in April 2016. The Act provides the powers for Scottish Ministers to prescribe in regulations procedures for how cremations will be carried out in Scotland.
