Overview

This consultation is to seek comment on a revised volume of practical fire safety guidance.  The guidance has been developed for dutyholders to help meet their responsibilities for fire safety under the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 in relation to existing premises with sleeping accommodation including small bed and breakfast and self-catering premises; small premises providing sleeping accommodation; and medium and large premises providing sleeping accommodation.

The guidance does not seek to impose new standards, nor is it intended to impose more onerous benchmarks, but is a revision and consolidation of existing guidance currently available on the Scottish Government FireLaw webpages.

Why your views matter

A series of sector specific guides for non-domestic premises is currently available on the Scottish Government FireLaw webpages.  These guides provide practical fire safety guidance for dutyholders to help meet their requirements under the Fire (Scotland) Act 2005.  The various guides covering non-residential premises were reviewed and consolidated earlier this year and the new Practical Fire Safety Guidance for Existing Non-Residential Premises was published in August 2017.

The purpose of this consultation is to seek views on the usefulness and content of this next volume of revised and consolidated guidance. The consultation is open to everyone, but in particular we would welcome the views of dutyholders, for whom this guidance has been written.

Consultation on the guidance is part of the work programme of the Ministerial Working Group on Building and Fire Safety which was established following the Grenfell fire.

What happens next

Once the consultation has closed, the responses will be considered and changes will be made to the draft guidance, as appropriate. The Practical Fire Safety Guidance for Existing Premises with Sleeping Accommodation will then be finalised and published on the Scottish Government FireLaw webpages, alongside other guidance on fire safety.
