Overview

The National Secure Adolescent Inpatient Service, or Foxgrove, located in Irvine, is the first secure inpatient service for young people in Scotland. It is expected to open in February 2023. It aims to meet the needs, and provide a dedicated and skilled multidisciplinary healthcare team to deliver the level of care, that young people who are seriously unwell and are a risk to others or themselves deserve, closer to home.

Foxgrove will provide care and treatment in a medium secure environment. It will sit alongside a network of secure inpatient services for adults, including the State Hospital (high security), three medium secure units, and low secure facilities across Health Boards. The serious risk to harm that patients in medium secure services present means that such services must have a level of physical security that prevents escape from a hospital. This includes the design and build of the hospital and its secure perimeter. It also includes procedures within the hospital designed to keep everyone: patients, visitors and staff safe and secure so that patients can receive the care and treatment they need in a therapeutic environment.
