We asked

On 14th December 2020, the Scottish Government published a six week consultation seeking the views on the Draft Revised Colorectal Cancer Quality Performance Indicators (QPIs).

Colorectal Cancer QPIs were first published in December 2012 and are subject to formal review every 3 years following analysis of national comparative data.  This ensures the success of the National Cancer QPIs in driving quality improvement by remaining clinically relevant and focussing on areas which will result in improvements to the quality of patient care.

During the engagement process views were sought on the revised QPIs that had been developed on:

  • The appropriateness of the QPIs that have been developed;
  • The target levels that had been set;
  • Practical issues surrounding measurement of QPIs or data collection.

You said

The consultation was widely distributed and 27 responses were received to the consultation.  These included responses from 20 clinical colleagues, 3 audit staff, 1 UK charity, 1 pharmaceutical company and 2 unknown.  All feedback received was reviewed and discussed by the Formal Review group and changes were made prior to the revised QPIs being published.

The responses along with a copy of the final Colorectal cancer QPI document were circulated to clinical and management colleagues from across NHSScotland, patients affected by colorectal cancer and the wider public as well as those who participated in the consultation.

Overview

Under the auspices of the Scottish Cancer Taskforce, National Cancer Quality Performance Indicators (QPIs) were developed to drive continuous quality improvement in cancer care across NHSScotland.  The Colorectal Cancer QPIs were first published in December 2012.  The QPIs are subject to formal review every 3 years, therefore the second cycle of review has now been undertaken following analysis of Year 6 national comparative data.

In order to ensure success of the National Cancer QPIs in driving quality improvement it is critical that QPIs continue to be clinically relevant and focus on areas which will result in improvements to the quality of patient care. 

Why your views matter

Wide clinical and public engagement is crucial to ensure wide inclusiveness of clinical colleagues across NHSScotland.  It is also vital to include the patients and the public as key stakeholders in this consultation to ensure the acceptability of the QPIs.  We would like your comments on the Revised Colorectal Cancer QPIs.  In particular we would like to hear your views on:

  • The appropriateness of the QPIs that have been developed.
  • The target levels that have been set.
  • Feasibility of measuring the QPIs identified in a meaningful and comparative way (i.e. ‘like for like’ comparison)

Forms to assist with submission of comments have been developed and should be used wherever possible.  Please note that supporting evidence should be detailed along with comments where appropriate.

What happens next

All responses will be collated for review and decision by the Colorectal Cancer QPI Review Group. Those who have participated in the engagement process will receive an overview of the changes made and a copy of the final Colorectal Cancer QPI document, ahead of publication in early 2021.
