Research suggests that black soldier flies may possess sentience, indicating a capacity for suffering. A comprehensive review by Gibbons et al. (2022) examines neural and behavioural evidence across various insect orders, including Diptera, to assess the potential for pain perception. They find that both juvenile and adult forms of the black soldier fly, amongst other species, have some of the required capabilities to feel pain.
Given that we know so little about how to humanely farm and slaughter insects, it would be irresponsible and terrible for animal welfare to remove the restriction on insect proteins. It's possible that they would be farmed in the billions, which is a huge risk given the little to no knowledge we have about their welfare.
I believe we shouldn't remove this restriction given the potential harm to insects. At the very least, more research into humane practices is required before removing this.
