Scotland occupies a unique marine position for the whole UK which still offers significant possibilities to conserve and enhance the marine environment, as a buffer against encroaching areas of damage and depletion and will greatly contribute to the maintenance and restoration of the marine ecosystem well beyond the value of the designated area.
This will have intrinsic benefit for species including those under threat from over fishing. inappropriate exploitation and a means of counterbalancing the consequences, as yet unknown, of climate change.

Marine research has a long and respected place in Scotland and the evidence for both threats and potential benefits has been well researched as far as I can ascertain.
