Reach and definitions: who should the Bill include?
Which of these proposals do you agree with (if any), please tell us why?
Please give us your views
I agree with proposal 2, the use of ‘neurodivergent’ as a broad, inclusive but not too broad definition.
Limiting the bill to certain names conditions would only act against the underlying aim of the bill to promote inclusion.

1. Neurodiversity is too broad
3. naming specific conditions risks certain individuals/conditions being missed and does not support the ethos of inclusion for all those with ASN

Statutory Strategies for Neurodivergence and Learning Disabilities

1. i believe there should be a nationwide strategy with local area development and lived experience input

i don’t think that devolving this to individual areas will result in equity across scotland. Whilst the needs of different areas should be considered on the national strategy and regulations made appropriately flexible to suit each areas needs, I believe that full devolution will promote inequality in the standard of provision across scotland.

how the strategies are monitored, measured and success/failures responded to.
Putting a strategy in place will only work if it is rigorously reviewed, tested and renewed.

Mandatory Training in the Public Sector
Do you agree with this proposal, please tell us why?

yes, this is a good idea. Although the level and depth of training should be proportional and appropriate to the situation and not a one size fits all approach.
Training should be targeted to public sector staff who would be best placed to benefit from the training and implement it in their work with neurodivergent individuals

Is there anything else that we should consider in relation to mandatory training?
Please give us your views
basic training should be mandatory but optional more detailed/advcanced training opportunities should be made available to public sector workers.
I also think that free training should be available to private sector workers as an option. for instance, making webinars, online tools accessible to all but mandatory for public sector workers.
if the government is spending money producing training it should benefit the maximum number of people

Health and Wellbeing

I strongly agree with proposal 2 and 5.
Training should be mandatory for all patient facing staff and should include all neurodivergencies and not just autism.
I have ADHD and, as a woman particularly, have been misunderstood and mishandled by the NHS on numerous occasions.
Annual health checks are also incredibly important for all with neurodivergencies who are more likely to have increased health issues and more likely to have them overlooked

Strongly agree on mandatory training for teachers, for specific planning outlined for how schools support neurodivergent pupils and that other neurodivergence, especially ADHD, should be recorded, reported and reviewed.

ADHD diagnosis in girls is often missed and dismissed. Teachers and public sector staff working with young girls need to be trained on recognising ADHD and supporting individuals for whom neurodivergence may have a disproportionate effect internally versus expressed behaviour and emotions.
