A new Household Recycling Code of Practice

Closes 21 Jan 2027

Organics (Food Waste)

Food waste remains one of the largest recyclable material streams still found in residual waste. Evidence considered during development of the Code suggests that increasing food waste recycling could deliver significant improvements in recycling performance and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The Code proposes that food waste collections should be provided separately where possible, although co-mingled food and garden waste collections would continue to be acceptable if they perform effectively. Food waste collections would preferably be provided weekly, and no less frequently than fortnightly. The consultation also seeks views on whether food waste collection requirements should be expanded from the current system of providing food waste collection to households in Urban-Rural Classication areas 1-3, to households in Urban-Rural Classification areas 1-4.

For more information, please see the Food and Garden Waste section of the consultation document.
