A new Household Recycling Code of Practice

Closes 21 Jan 2027

Communications

Effective communication was consistently highlighted during the co-design process as an essential part of successful recycling services. Even well-designed collection systems can underperform if householders are unclear about what can be recycled or how services should be used.

The Code proposes that local authorities maintain a communications strategy for recycling and waste services, provide clear and timely information through a range of channels, and regularly review the effectiveness of their communications activities. Greater consistency in services across Scotland is also expected to create opportunities for stronger national and local recycling messages.

For more information, please see the Communications section of the consultation document.

20. Do you agree that communications recommendations should form part of the Code of Practice?
21. How should local authorities AND national government communicate with householders to promote positive recycling and waste behaviours and how should this be reflected in the Code of Practice?
