A new Household Recycling Code of Practice

Closes 21 Jan 2027

Dry Recyclable Waste Collections

The Code proposes that local authorities collect paper and card separately from containers such as plastics, metals and cartons through a minimum "twin-stream" recycling system. Evidence considered during development of the Code found that separating these materials can improve recycling quality and reduce contamination, increasing the value of collected materials and supporting carbon reduction.

The Code also proposes that local authorities continue to have flexibility in how they collect glass. Glass may be collected separately at the kerbside, collected with containers, or provided through bring banks where councils can demonstrate that equivalent quantities and quality of glass are captured.

For more information, please see the Dry Recyclable Waste Collections section in the consultation document.
