Given that Scotland's resource use currently far exceeds sustainable levels, and much of the ecological damage caused by our overconsumption is offshored, I think the definition of 'sustainable development' should be widened to reflect the need to ensure that development in Scotland does not come at the expense of development in other nations. Drawing on the concept of planetary boundaries within which there is a safe operating space for humanity, perhaps 'sustainable development' could be defined as "development that meets the social and material needs of all people without transgressing our national-level fair share of earth's safe operating space".
